Ergonomics as a Scientific Discipline
The foundation of modern ergonomic studies began during World War II. Early investigations revealed that numerous aircraft accidents could have been prevented, mainly due to poor cockpit designs. This prompted designers to analyze pilot interactions with controls, striving to create more intuitive and user-friendly environments. As the field expanded, it began encompassing all aspects of human activity, marking the onset of user-centered design—where technology adapts to human needs rather than the opposite.

Individual Differences Matter
With the rise of computer technology in the 1960s, the scope of ergonomics further evolved to cover all human activities. Since no two bodies are identical, it's crucial to avoid blanket assumptions about ideal working positions based solely on height. Anthropometric research aids in understanding the diverse physical characteristics within populations. A significant challenge in workplace ergonomics arises from the disconnect between the furniture industry, which prioritizes ergonomic design, and technology suppliers, who often overlook these considerations. This gap results in ergonomic mismatches for individuals using desks and IT equipment. Effective ergonomic design requires recognizing the harmonious fit between users, their tools, and their work environment, tailored to each individual’s needs.
